There is a recent article in the WSJ talking about the possible breakup of Spain. I am surprised by how much information about what is going on here can be read in the international media. I have read the article and it summarises what happens here more or less quite well:
This post is thought for those who want an answer to some of its questions and use Internet for that case. Needless to say that here you will find an answer but needless to say too that the answer may not be the one you would desire.
So should the US support Catalonia independence?
Well, at first, right now, it is obvious that the US just should remain silent. As any other country the US should wait and see …
But let’s imagine that the day comes when the world needs to know what the US has to say. Well, in this case, I imagine that the US just have to see what the EU says.
Once that said is it important to the US an independent Catalonia? Can that be good for the US? Some benefit of it?
It is obvious that if the US supports Catalonia indepence that can bring more little independence states into the European Union. Is htis good for the US? I imagine that this depends in the way this affects the EU.
Wrting this I am realizing how something that can be very important for us in Catalonia it cannot be at all important outside Catalonia or Spain.
As far as I know new states have been born in two ways: after a violent conflict or after an agreement. In the case of Spain and Catalonia it is not possible for me to imagine a violent conflict to take place as we are inside the European Union. Any violent conflict it would mean we go out of the EU at once, I imagine. And an agreement, we have not agreement right yet …
The other day an American professor or soemthing was asked how coud Catalonia get independnece? He said that one of the ways to have an independent Catalonia is that the world wants it! Until now it seems that only people in Catalonia want that and not everybody.
So I have thought what could give an independent Catalonia to the world that could make an independent Catalonia to be very welcomed by the planet?
And this is my proposal. Catalonia, if it gets independent it will be a fruit of the European Union. Without the existence of the European Union it is difficult that we would be talking about an independent Catalonia.
So if a possible independent Catalonia is a fruit of the European Union then an independent catalonia must wear a European Union stamps that shines around the planet. And what has being making the European Union all this years: TO BRING STEP BY STEP, LITTLE BY LITTLE, THE FRONTIERS DOWN!
SO AN INDEPENDENT CATALONIA SHOULD BE THE FIRST STATE OF THE WORLD WITHOUT HAVING BORDERS!
Some centuries ago, cities used to have walls around them. Now they do not have them!
So now it is the same! CATALONIA SHOULD NOT HAVE BORDERS!
For Catalonia it should not be difficult to do so! All around it the same language is even spoken!
It may seem crazy not to put borders but are there borders between towns? Well, there are of course, but we do not seen them. The same could happen in a new Catalonia.
No borders with our neighbours! If a future Spain and France would want to put borders it would be their problem.
So,if we do not put borders, what are we doing with the new state. Well, we just collect taxes in Barcelona and we send our part to Brussels. Without having to send money to Madrid (at least directly!)
Nowadays I feel that the phrase EUROPE NEEDS GERMANY HELP can sound more familiar than GERMANY NEEDS EUROPEAN HELP. When we talk about eurobonds is is in someway like saying EUROPE NEEDS GERMANY HELP.
But there is something that worries me. It seems as if Germany could save a bit the eurozone by just accepting eurobonds and by the others accepting German austerity.
Living in a peripheral country needing a bailout for the banks it is easy to look at Germany and say: How lucky they are! I wish my country was in German position.
But if you think over and over it it is not very difficult that Germany is too in a very dramatic and stressful situation!
As far as I see the current situation in the eurozone the only solution I see to stop the attack to weaker countries is that Germany pays in someway the bills of peripheral countries. Eurobonds is the euphemism for that.
But let’s imagine that tomorrow Angela Merkel wakes up in a very rare mood and accepted that. Imagine that Angela Merkel said: “I HAVE CHANGED OF MIND. WE CANNOT REMAIN LIKE THIS. GERMANY IS GOING TO PUT ALL ITS STRENGTH TO DEFEND THE EURO. GERMANY ACCEPTS EUROBONDS AND TO PAY TH BILL AND ALL IS NEEDED IN ORDER TO SHOW TO THE WORLD THAT AN ATTACK TO THE EURO IS AN ATTACK TO GERMANY”
Well, if Germany did that it is obvious that in countries like Spain, Portugal, Greece, etc we wouldbe delighted! No more worries! The powerful Germany putting all its money to save us!
But then …
What would happen in Germany?
Well, it would be a nightmare in Germany! People in Germany would be so so angry that Angela Merkel would not last even a second more as chancellor!
Germans, I believe, have the feeling of being very careful in doing things in a proper way so they are proud of their country and its achievements. So, it is not strange they see they deserve to have a wealthy country because they do things in a right way for that goal. So to pay for countries which they see that have not acting in a proper way must be almost a crime.
I think this is the real dilemma now in Europe. If we want the euro to survive it is necessary that money from Germany goes to the weaker parts of th eurozone.
So I think that Angela Merkel is asking so much austerity to peripheral countries because it is a way to show to Germans that something is asked to the peripherla countries in exchange.
I think the dilemma is now a terrible one! If Germany does “not pay the bill” then the eurozone collapses and quite soon. On the other hand if Germany “pays the bill” then Germany has to get quite sure that the eurozone is under control.
But my big worry is that even if we have MEHR EUROPE, as Angela says, would this compensate the Germans?
I say that because I feel that having MEHR EUROPA is going to be a difficult path as states will have to lose sovereignty. But for peripherla countries it could be good as it means to have a strong currency. But for Gemrnay?
I am afraid that Germany could find that it creates a strong euzone but that the prize for that is a Germany that pays the bill.
And I can assure you that if a territory has the feeling that it is paying the bill that cannot be good.
Can you imagine Germany having to transfer a lot of money to Spain and at the same time having in the future an increase in jobless people?
So when I say that GERMANY NEEDS EUROPEAN HELP what I mean is that I find it is necessary that we realise that Germany is too in a very difficult situation.
Who says that a more integrated Europe would be a more peaceful Europe? I cannot imagine that a eurozone that needs money to pay the bills can last for long.
If Germany has too much power in the eurozone we will have a lot of friction as some countries would feel they are asked too much austerity. On the other hand if Germany is obliged (by US, China, etc) to bring stability to the eurozone by “paying the bill” then we will be creating a dangerous climate in Germany!
So I imagine one way to help Germany is to acknowledge the good things we can learn from Germany and try to have these good things in a European level.
We need to create in the eurozone more places like Germany. If the eurozone is to succeed it is necessary that we take the good things from each country.
I have friends in Germany. How on earth can I explain them that their country must pay the bill for Spain? Why should them accept that? The only way I see for them to accept that it is to get them assurances that Spain is not going to waste the money.
In Spain there are a lot of houses that are not sold. We had the real estate bubble and now some banks are in trouble because they put money there. Why not come, for example, the Gemran, to live in Spain?
The title of this post is not exactly what I want to mean but it can let you see what I mean. What I mean is that the euro can only survive if the citizens of the euro see it as the symbol of something that means a lot to them.
Some decades ago people died in Europe in the name of freedom
- Will the Euro survive,,, (businessinsider.com)
As a citizen of the eurozone I am very worried about the future of the euro. So I try to say that a vote for Syriza could mean the end not just of th euro but of the ideals behind the European Union. I also try to say that the president of Spain should try to bring credibility to Spain by just cutting wages to civil servants and by increasing VAT. As Europe and the IMF tell Spain. It is obvious it is not something to welcome much but if Spain does not do that then we are against the futue of the country and of Europe!
I feel obviously powerless as I cannot do anything but to writy these posts. But if I feel powerless being inside the eurozone how should the people outside the eurozne feel?
I imagine that people outside of th eurozone must be very angry with the eurozone.
People from countries without the level of wealth that some enjoy in Europe must see the eurozone as a bunch of wealthy stupid people who cannot agree between them!
It is a shame. If I was not European or a citizen of th eeurozone I would be writing awful words about some European politicians.
For one moment I tried to imagine myself living outside the eurozone and in fact outside Europe. In order not to go very far let me imagine that I just go to the beautiful country of Morocco. Let’s imagine I am living in, for example, Marrakesh. Well! I see it has something positive the eurocrisis!
If I was in Marrakesh I would think: “Well, you see, Europe is not such a wonderful place as some believe. They seem crazy people. They have a lot of wealth but they are to eager to share it so that they prefer to break their currency that to balance their wealth.”
So imagining myselg outside the eurozne I have realised that the eurocrisis can be good for people outside as it is a way to realise that each country must try to improve on its own and that Europe is not such a wonderful place as some believed.
It is incredible! I have been so worried about the euro and Spain and the eurozone that I have not realised that each day to be a European sounds worse if you leave Europe! At least a European from the eurozone!
As I am so fed up with European politicians not solving th eeurocrisis sometimes I feel that if I was not from the eurozne I would even celebrate the collapse of the euro! But as I am inside th euero and its collapse brings chaos worldwide I don’t want its collapse.
Who knows, maybe the US, Russia, China and the UK should give an ultimatum to the eurozone! Or you solve the eurocrisis once for all or we boycott eurozone products.
I think it is time that the rest of the world intervenes the eurozone! All the eurozone! The rest of countries should not allow that the eurozne puts in danger the global economy.
Until recently I just thought it was a problem of peripheral countries but now I think that Germany is also to blame! We all went t the same restaurant and we all sat on the same table. We cannot be for ages quarrelling who pays what! We should pay and that’s all!
This situation of today with Greece shows that we have done something in a wrong way! We cannot share a currency if one part can decide not to pay back and then we have a drama! This is not serious!

I want to congratulate Dario Mutabdzija for his idea about a ship called BLUESEED. It is a revolutionary idea that could be a start ot thousands of ships around the world with the same purpose.
The idea is to have a ship called BLUESEED in international waters near California so that enterpreneurs could attend meetings in Silicon Valley. Problems with obtaining an American visa would be behind the project.

When I think of Russia I always thing of the people of the other side of Europe. After all Barcelona and Moscow are more or less in the two extremes of Europe.
The wife of Salvador Dali, Gala, was from Russia. And Russia with the Hermitage has one of the best collection of European arts.
So, why is Russia and the EU always at odds? Cannot we forget once and for all the cold war?
Russia sent to Eurovision a set of old women that got an universal appeal at the time of voting for them. Unfortunately Syria divides us. But we have not to forget that if we blame Russia of not acting in the right way in Russia it is also true that no country in Europe has withdrawn its ambassadors from Moscow.
Sometimes, I have the feeling as if russia wanted that Western Europe was a disaster zone. In this way it could have more influence and rule from Portugal to Vladivostock.
But there is another option. This year Chelsea wan the Champions. As we know Chelsea gets the money from Abramovich! If Russia changed a bit maybe this year the Champions would have been won by a Russian team as maybe Abramovich would have preferred to stay in Moscow.
I respect very much Russian culture and I find the Russian people are some of the most enigmatic and beautiful people in the world. I love Chejov and Tchaikovsky.
So, could not Russia try to be closer to the rest of Europe? I think Russia should choose Europe as a place to have friends.
Why is so that New York seems to me much closer than Moscow? Without cold war why should Russia not be in better terms with the rest of the old continent?

These last days this blog of THE.CAT is receiving most of the visits from the UK. This is new as it was the US the country which was responsible for most of the visits. As I try to write in British English and I write more about the UK than the US I feel happy that at last THE.CAT is starting to get visits from the UK.
Eurovision and the eurocrisis may have been the reason for most visits. So will this increase of UK visitors be something short or will it end even defining the content of THE.CAT?

These last hours for the first time I have realised in a full scale the humiliation that means for any nation to have soldiers from another nation and realise that they misbehave and even kill your children without even be able to judge them.
It is not strange to anyone that the Talibans hate the Americans so that whatever the Americans do, good or bad, will be always not welcome by the Talibans.
But, if I have to be sincere, I am afraid that now all the world is seeing that the USA is humiliating the Afghanistan people. Imagine that an American soldier gets crazy and starts killing people in London. Would not be a humiliation for the UK that the Americans take the crazy soldier back to the US and do not let the British decide?
Some hours ago I heard a comment by an American official saying something like that they do not change location to judge just because the locals want that. I find that outrageous because shows no respect to the “location” or to the “locals”. The children that were killed were Afghan children so it is not strange that people from Afghanistan want to try him! By using the word location instead of Afghanistan the American official is showing no respect for the dead people in Afghanistan.
Anyway, if a person from Europe like me, that has nothing in common with Taliban views and that, on the contrary, shares with the US the values of democracy and freedom, feels offended by the way the US has acted I cannot imagine how the Afghan people may feel!: ALL THE WORLD KNOWS THAT AN AMERICAN HAS KILLED A LOT OF CIVILIANS INCLUDING CHILDREN AND ALL THE WORLD SEES HOW THE USA, IN AN ARROGANT WAY PUT HIM OUT OF AFGHANISTAN!: DOES THAT MEAN THAT ANYONE WHO GOES TO THE US AND STARTS KILLING AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE US AND GO TO HIS OWN COUNTRY?
In the case of Europe one at least could say that the soldier has to be taken out of Afghanistan because in Europe we do not have Death Penalty but as the US also has Death Penalty as some uncivilised countries I do not see why the soldier should not be judged in Afghanistan.
By this wrong and shameful behaviour, the US is putting in danger not only their own military but the rest of soldiers from other countries. Unfortunately the other countries don’t say anything. So, when the bad ones are born in America the world remains silent … I just hope that all the soldiers from Europe leave Afghanistan as soon as possible. We cannot continue to be fighting an absurd war next to the Americans. They are putting in danger, with its arrogance, all the NATO troops!
